If your organisation accepts file uploads with form submissions, you need to make sure that the files are safe before they get uploaded to your server. Malware-infected file uploads can cause data breaches, system disruptions and exploitation attacks. This is especially true for zero-day threats, which exploit vulnerabilities that are unknown to software vendors and have no patch available.
One of the best ways to protect your infrastructure is to scan file uploads as they are being uploaded. This prevents malware from ever reaching your servers and wreaking havoc there. However, scanning file uploads at the edge requires a solution that can run at the speed of business and avoid impacting web app performance.
Scan File Uploads: Prevent Malicious Content Online
The good news is that Akamai’s Cloud Security Platform includes a feature to scan file uploads at the edge using the powerful antivirus engine, ClamAV®. This provides a cost-effective way to ensure that your file uploads are free from viruses and malware.
To enable the feature, select Enable on-upload malware scanning for the file upload field in the Settings menu. Once enabled, you’ll see a message in the field that warns that uploaded files will be scanned on-upload and may be temporarily withheld from view while they are being scanned.
To protect against high volumes of uploads that exceed your storage limit, you can also set a monthly malware scanning cap on the file upload field. Once this limit is reached, the malware scanning will pause for that storage account. If you’re unsure about the amount of storage you have and how it’s being used, contact Customer Support for help with setting up an appropriate cap.
